Mom’s Chex Mix Recipe

5.0 from 1 vote

My mom used to make this crunchy, savory snack every Christmas season. She has since passed away but we all have fond memories of walking by the kitchen and grabbing a handful of Mom’s Chex Mix.

Mom’s Chex Mix is a modified version of the famous Original Chex Party Mix. It’s made from three types of Chex cereal tossed with a mix of pretzels and nuts (optional), all coated in a buttery, seasoned sauce and baked until crisp and flavorful. Try this delicious version and start making family memories!

Chex Party Mix originated with Ralston Purina in the early 1950s, first appearing in a Life magazine ad in 1952 to boost Chex cereal sales, featuring Wheat and Rice Chex with butter, Worcestershire, and seasonings baked in the oven. A popular story credits a Ralston executive’s wife for serving it at a 1955 party, solidifying its place as a holiday staple, though it was one of many “TV mixes” of the era. While homemade versions evolved, the mix became a commercial product in 1987, acquired by General Mills in 1996, and now boasts many varieties.

Ingredients

Chex cereal: Rice, Corn and Wheat Chex cereal are all used in this recipe.

Butter: Butter brings a creamy delicious flavor to this mix.

Worcestershire: Adds a deep, savory umami flavor.

Seasonings: Garlic powder and onion powder add a warm, savory depth that boosts flavor without overpowering, while salt enhances and balances all the ingredients by bringing out their natural tastes. Together, they create a well-rounded, savory base that makes Mom’s Chex Mix taste fuller and more satisfying.

Nuts: This item is optional. If you have someone in you family who is allergic to nuts, the dish is just as good without them. However, if you want to include them use a cup of mixed nuts.

Pretzels: Mom always used stick pretzels in her Chex Mix, but I have used different shape pretzels. I use whatever is on sale.
