KFC Coleslaw Recipe (copycat)

Crisp, cool, and tangy—coleslaw is the perfect crunch that brings any plate to life! The dressing in this recipe tastes almost identical to the original KFC coleslaw thanks to one key ingredient. You will be pleasantly surprised. And it is super easy to make.

Coleslaw originated from the Dutch term koolsla, meaning “cabbage salad,” which was brought to America by Dutch settlers in the 17th and 18th centuries. Its roots, however, trace back even further to ancient Rome, where people enjoyed cabbage mixed with vinegar and spices. Over time, the dish evolved in Europe and America, with early versions using vinegar-based dressings. In the early 20th century, mayonnaise became a popular addition, giving rise to the creamy coleslaw we know today.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

Delicious: While it’s easy to purchase coleslaw from the store, nothing beats the flavor of homemade coleslaw. And my coleslaw recipe will knock your socks off!

Classic, simple ingredients: This recipe calls for pantry staples. When blended together, they create a dish that young and old will love.

Year-round favorite: Coleslaw is a side dish that can be enjoyed no matter the season. While it pairs well with fried chicken, it goes well with a wide variety of proteins because its crisp, tangy flavor balances both rich and smoky dishes. Some of the best pairings include: pulled pork, fish, burgers, shrimp or crab. For a vegetarian option, coleslaw provides a refreshing crunch to savory, marinated soy proteins.

Tips & Substitutes

  • Mayonnaise: Personally I like using Duke’s mayonnaise. It provides a creamy taste, uses all natural ingredients and has no GMO. You can substitute lite mayo if you are watching your calories.
  • Lemon juice: Use either fresh squeezed or bottled lemon juice.
  • Cabbage: If time is short, feel free to use pre-shredded cabbage that can be found in your local grocery store.
  • Carrot: Use either pre-shredded carrots or shred you own. Both work well in this recipe.
