How to Peel Tomatoes (step by step guide)

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

Removing the skin from tomatoes is a simple process often done to improve the texture and appearance of dishes like sauces, soups, or salsas. It also allows you to remove any blemishes the tomato might have.

Directions

  • Wash the tomatoes.
  • Score the bottom of each tomato with a small “X.”
    • Blanch a few tomatoes at a time, by boiling then in water for about 30 seconds. Or until you see the skins start to split.
    • Once the skin begins to peel back, transfer the tomatoes to an ice bath to stop the cooking process.
    • Afterward, the skin can be easily peeled off, leaving you with tender, smooth tomato flesh ready for use. It’s really that easy! If your homegrown tomatoes are not perfect, they still turn out great. Just cut out the bad parts.

Now your tomatoes are ready for canning, or making soups, stews or salsa.
